Long-Distance Relationship Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!  Have you bought a gift yet?  It can be especially difficult to buy a Valentine’s Day gift when your partner lives in another country–chocolate, flowers and a nice dinner out aren’t really an option.  Here are some gift suggestions that range from expensive to free. This weekend is the perfect time to pick a gift and place your order so that it can make its way across the world by February 14.

If you want to take your Skype sessions to the next level, try this HD webcam.  It has the ability to record and make video calls in high definition, which is a major upgrade from most standard webcams.  The sound quality is amazing too!  This webcam works on both PC and Mac.  Buy one for your partner and one for yourself!

PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives

This book is an extension of PostSecret.com, a website where people all over the world send in anonymous postcards with their secrets written on them.  Since 2004, the site’s owner has received more than 150,000 postcards.  PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives is a collection of some of the best.  If you’ve ever kept a secret, this book is a pleasure to read.  It might even get you and your partner to share some secrets with each other!

Threadless: Ten Years of T-shirts from the World’s Most Inspiring Online Design Community

Threadless.com is the internet T-shirt company with millions of tees sold since it began in 2000. It pioneered the online business model of crowd-sourced or community-driven design, in which people submit designs that are voted on by the site’s users and printed. Over the past 10 years, the company has amassed a vast archive of very cool, very hip, and often very entertaining designs, and Threadless is a spectacular showcase of 400 of the very best T-shirts created by the community.  Very cool.

BoldLoft Long-Distance Relationship Pillowcases

I’ve written about these pillowcases before–they are so fun!   BoldLoft makes really romantic designs, like the one pictured on the right, as well as some cute ones that are more funny than adorable.  They come in sets of two pillowcases: one for you and one for your partner.  Bonus: pillowcases are light and inexpensive to ship!  This is my favorite design.

Classic Moleskine Journal (Ruled)

Moleskine is known for making high-quality journals of various sizes and styles.  Add a nice pen and you’ll never stop writing!  I take one of these with me everywhere for various writing and note taking.  If your partner likes to journal, do him or her and favor and buy this notebook.  If a plain journal isn’t your style (and you have a sense of humor), try a Wreck this Journal, a notebook with instructional prompts on how to destroy it.

Me Without You

Looking for an adorable way to say I love you? From famed cartoonists Lisa Swerling and Ralph Lazar, Me Without You features countless cute color illustrations of scenarios that are simply incomplete without two.  This charming book is a great visual expression of missing someone.

More Ideas

I have even more ideas for you, but these last ones don’t come with pretty pictures.

Kiva gift card: Kiva is a microlending website that provides small loans to help people around the globe with projects designed to boost their well being.  Kiva’s ultimate goal is to help alleviate poverty in the world.  You can purchase a $25 gift card, which is then delivered by Facebook, email or “snail mail” to your partner.  Then, they can go online and choose someone to lend the money to.  If your boyfriend or girlfriend values charity, this is the perfect gift–and it doesn’t even need to be shipped!

Some of your clothing: It can be fun to mail an item of clothing to your partner, like a favorite t-shirt.  Consider wearing it for a short time or spraying a bit of your perfume on it so it smells like you.  This is another item that’s easy and cheap to ship.

Flowers: Ordering flowers is difficult when your partner lives aboard, but if you’re both in the United States, it’s a cinch!  You can look up a local flower shop in your partner’s area or use a national service like ProFlowers.  They’ll even write the card for you.

Have other ideas?  Share them in a comment!  I’d love to know what gifts you gave or received last Valentine’s Day.

**Disclaiminer:  If you buy any of the above products from Amazon.com, I get a small commission on the sale.  The money goes toward the web hosting bill for InLoveAbroad.com.  Thank you so much for supporting this site!

Boyfriend pillow: kind of creepy

Boyfriend PillowThis morning, I was browsing on Google+ and came across something called a “Boyfriend Pillow”, which is probably marketed to people in a long-distance relationship.  All I could think was “Really?  They think someone would pay $30 for this?”  Take a look for yourself on the right:

Thankfully, that awkward thing reminded me of some really adorable LDR pillowcases that would make great gifts.  Halloween has passed and I believe that means it’s officially almost Christmas time. Consider adding a set of these adorable pillowcases to your holiday shopping list.

The company BoldLoft makes my favorite pillowcases.  They have a variety of designs, which have now spilled over onto coffee mugs and other products.
